Celebrating the Holidays with a Loved One in Senior Living

It is that cozy time of year again, and the holidays are just around the corner. The holiday season can be a time of joy, togetherness, and celebration, however, for some, it can also be a very hard time of year. Especially, for those with loved ones that are far away. At QSLM, we are committed to making the holidays meaningful for everyone in our communities.

Whether you are planning to attend one of our festive holiday events or planning a special celebration of your own, there are countless ways to make this time of year special for those in senior living. To help, we gathered a few helpful ideas to make this season extra special for residents and their loved ones.

Continuing Family Traditions:

For many, family traditions are the heart of holiday celebrations. These traditions not only bring joy they also connect generations of friends and family. From attending a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day to baking Christmas cookies with grandchildren, traditions like these, help make this time of year super special. If you have a loved one in senior living, this does not mean that family traditions have to stop or fade away, we encourage loved ones to continue traditions with residents. Maintaining traditions is not only a fun way to celebrate the holidays, but it often also allows residents to reflect on the past and provides them with a comforting sense of purpose and belonging. For families who cannot visit in person, staying connected virtually is a great alternative and just as meaningful. You could write heartfelt cards and schedule virtual FaceTime calls for times when everyone is all together, such as when you are baking cookies or on Christmas morning when everyone is gathered and opening presents.  Simple gestures like these ensure that residents feel included in family activities, no matter the distance.

Join in on Community Events

Community spirit is super important, especially around the holidays, and we strive to capture that in everything we do! Our activity calendars are thoughtfully designed to celebrate this festive time of year in a variety of ways—from larger family events and happy hour socials to crafting and baking activities, and so much more.

If your loved one seems a bit reserved during this time, it is important to help encourage them to join the festivities that are being held at their community. These events and activities can be a wonderful way to lift their spirits and help them build connections with other residents. They are also a great opportunity for families to visit and join in on the fun, as well.

Another great way to spread some holiday cheer is by helping your loved one decorate their room or door. Adding festive touches, like nostalgic keepsakes or artwork from grandchildren, can bring a sense of warmth and joy to their space.

Consider Sending a Holiday Care Package

Another great idea is to create a Holiday Care Package for your loved one filled with some of their favorite things, such as snacks, little trinkets, or games that they can play with others. Care packages are a thoughtful way for loved ones who live far away to still stay connected. They are also a tangible reminder to let them know that you are thinking about them and can help brighten their holiday season.

Writing letters or sending cards is another great way to brighten your loved ones' day. Many residents enjoy displaying their holiday cards for others to see and spread joy.

Explore the Local Area

While we do plan a variety for our residents to enjoy throughout each month, taking your loved one on a special outing could be a great idea to make them feel special this holiday season. Some great outing ideas include taking your loved one out to lunch one afternoon, driving around to view holiday lights one evening, or having them tag along on a special family tradition, like attending a holiday church service.

Another option is to see if you can join one of our community outings. Many of our residents love it when family members participate, adding an extra layer of joy to the experience. However, we recommend checking with your Activities Team in advance to ensure any necessary arrangements, such as tickets, are taken care of ahead of time.

All in all, celebrating the holidays with loved ones in senior living can be incredibly meaningful and special. Whether you're able to visit in person or stay connected virtually, we hope these ideas help make this holiday season joyful.
